You’re in your car, driving home from work, and suddenly it hits you: an app that helps people in Jeddah find last-minute parking spots. By the time you park, you’re already dreaming of the logo, the features, and the first million users.

But a few days later, doubt creeps in. Is this idea actually good? Or just another pipe dream that will cost you time and money?

You’re not alone. Every week, I talk to founders in Riyadh, Dubai, and Kuwait who have brilliant ideas—but no way to tell if they’re worth building. The good news? You don’t need a tech background to validate your idea. You just need to ask the right questions.

Here are 7 honest signs your idea is worth pursuing—and signs it might not be.

SIGN 1: You have a crystal-clear problem

Worth pursuing: You can describe the problem in one sentence. Example: “Small restaurant owners in Dammam spend 3 hours a day manually entering orders from WhatsApp into their POS system.” That’s a real, painful, specific problem.

Not worth it: The problem is vague. “I want to make an app that helps people be more productive.” That’s too broad. If you can’t name the pain, you can’t solve it.

SIGN 2: People are already paying for a workaround

Worth pursuing: Your target customers are already using spreadsheets, paper, or expensive consultants to solve this problem. That’s proof they’re desperate enough to spend money.

Not worth it: Nobody is actively looking for a solution. If your friends say “That’s cool, but I’d never pay for it,” listen carefully.

SIGN 3: You understand who your customer is

Worth pursuing: You can describe your ideal user in detail: “Busy moms in Al Khobar who order groceries online but hate the limited delivery slots.” You know where they hang out, what they complain about, and how much they’d pay.

Not worth it: You say “Anyone could use this.” That usually means no one will. The most successful ideas start with a very specific audience.

SIGN 4: You’ve talked to at least 20 potential users

Worth pursuing: You’ve had real conversations—not just with family and friends—and heard the same frustration repeated. People have told you “If you build this, I will buy it today.”

Not worth it: You’ve only discussed the idea with people who love you. Or you’ve been building in secret, afraid to share. Validation requires vulnerability.

SIGN 5: The idea excites you for the long haul

Worth pursuing: You can imagine yourself working on this for 2–3 years, even when it gets boring. Building tech is hard, and the initial excitement fades. Passion keeps you going.

Not worth it: You want to build it quickly and sell it. Tech startups rarely work as a “get rich quick” plan. If you’re not passionate about the problem, you’ll quit at the first obstacle.

SIGN 6: You have a simple, testable first step

Worth pursuing: You can launch a basic version (minimum viable product, or MVP) in 2–4 weeks. For example, a simple website where people can book a service, even if you handle the rest manually.

Not worth it: The idea requires months of development, complex AI, or partnerships with big companies before you can test anything. That’s a recipe for wasted time.

SIGN 7: The market is growing or underserved

Worth pursuing: You see a growing trend—like more people in the Gulf ordering food delivery—and you have a unique angle. Or you’re solving a problem that no one else is addressing well.

Not worth it: The market is shrinking, or there are 20 competitors with deep pockets doing exactly the same thing. You don’t need to be first, but you need a clear advantage.

What if your idea is worth pursuing? Take one action today

If you’ve read these signs and feel optimistic, don’t just sit on it. The next step is simple: build a landing page or a simple prototype. See if real people sign up or give you their email.

And if you’re unsure? That’s okay. You can start with a small project—like a workflow automation for one local business—to build your confidence.
